Harry Butler Centenary

The town of Minlaton celebrates the centenary of the flight from Adelaide to Minlaton by local lad Harry Butler. It was the first flight over water to deliver mail in the southern hemisphere. When Ross Smith arrived in Adelaide in 1920, he landed at Butler’s Northfield aerodrome. Learn more.

State Library reveals its epic flight treasures

Visit Adelaide’s beautiful State Library of South Australia from November 2019 to April 2020 to see a major exhibition of historic artifacts and memorabilia. The exhibition will remain on display until April 2020 to celebrate the centenary of the Smith crew’s victorious landing in Adelaide on 23 March 1920.

The Smith brothers were carrying the first international airmail to arrive on Australian soil. The ‘Cinderella stamp’ created exclusively for those 360-odd letters carried on board are today worth upwards of $15,000. AEROPEX 2019 will commemorate the epic flight. Drill Hall, Torrens Parade Ground.
