Adelaide sites | Epic Flight Centenary

Across Adelaide you’ll find fascinating sites relating to the Smith crew and their epic flight – from the Vickers Vimy at Adelaide Airport to the Sir Ross Smith Memorial outside Adelaide Oval. : Adelaide Airport: home of the Vimy and a John Dowie statue honouring the four crew members.

: SA Aviation Museum, Lipson St, Port Adelaide: Giant Vimy mural and permanent display.

: Sir Ross Smith Memorial Statue beside Adelaide Oval on War Memorial Drive.

: North Road Cemetery, Nailsworth: resting place of Ross & Keith Smith.

: Newman St, Semaphore, believed to be the birthplace of Ross Smith. Look out for the stobie pole painted in his honour.

: Centennial Park Cemetery, Goodwood Rd, Pasadena: resting place of Vickers Vimy mechanic Wally Shiers.

: Army Museum of South Australia, Anzac Hwy: permanent display honouring Ross Smith’s role in the 3rd Light Horse in WWI.

: Aviemore, 158 Stephen Tce, Gilberton: former family home of the Smith family. Please note this is a private residence.

: Walkerville Primary School, where Jessie Smith planted a gum tree in honour of her son after Ross Smith died in 1922.

: St Peter’s Cathedral, North Adelaide, where Ross Smith’s body lay in state before his 1922 funeral. Look out for plaques honouring the three Smith brothers Keith, Ross and Colin (who died in France in WWI).

: Old Government House, Belair, home to the Smith family crib and piano.

: Mutooroo Station, south of Cockburn near the SA/NSW border: childhood home of the Smith brothers. Please note this is a private residence.

: Vickers Vimy G-EAOU artwork along Hampstead Rd near the entrance to Lightsview, where the Vimy landed in March 1920. If you walk up the ramp and follow the walking path straight ahead, you’ll come to the significant pine tree planted to honour the Smith crew.
